AIDS 2014 er i gang

I går 20. juli startet AIDS 2014, også kalt The International AIDS Conference, i Melbourne, Australia. AIDS 2014 er nummer 20 i rekken av aidskonferanser og mye har skjedd siden den første ble arrangert i 1985 med ca 2.000 deltakere til årets konferanse hvor man venter ca. 14.000 deltakere og 1.200 journalister fra ca 200 land. Årets konferanse varer til og med 25. juli, og har følgende som tema: «Stepping up the pace».

Ved å arrangere en slik konferanse, ønsker man å samle aktivister, forskere, myndighetspersoner og andre for å vurdere hvor langt vi har kommet i kampen mot hiv, evaluere nylige vitenskapelige fremskritt og erfaringer fra tidligere arbeid, samt å kollektivt stake ut kursen videre. Gjennom årets program vil deltakerne, i tillegg til å bli presentert siste nytt innen hivforskning, ha mulighet til å diskutere de største utfordringene vi står ovenfor i det globale arbeidet med hiv og aids. En deklarasjon med navn «Melbourne Declaration. Nobody left behind» har også blitt utarbeidet.

Her står blant annet følgende:

We […] call for the immediate and unified opposition to these discriminatory and stigmatizing practices and urge all parties to take a more equitable and effective approach through the following actions:

  • Governments must repeal repressive laws and end policies that reinforce discriminatory and stigmatizing practices that increase the vulnerability to HIV, while also passing laws that actively promote equality.
  • Decision makers must not use international health meetings or conferences as a platform to promote discriminatory laws and policies that undermine health and wellbeing.
  • The exclusion of organisations that promote intolerance and discrimination including sexism, homophobia, and transphobia against individuals or groups, from donor funding for HIV programmes.
  • All healthcare providers must demonstrate the implementation of non-discriminatory policies as a prerequisite for future HIV programme funding.
  • Restrictions on funding, such as the anti-prostitution pledge and the ban on purchasing needles and syringes, must be removed as they actively impede the struggle to combat HIV, sexually transmitted infections, and hepatitis C among sex workers and people who inject drugs.
  • Advocacy by all signatories to this Declaration for the principles of inclusion, non-criminalization, non-discrimination, and tolerance.
